The university ofBelgrano has e-mail, I'm so happy! Now I can communicate much better!
My first week here was wonderful. I spent most of the time with Natalia and some on my own, and stayed the entire week with Natalia. You'll receive a letter from me soon about my first few days.
Yesterday (Wed) I moved to the Zabala Home. I don't like it. I share a small room with two girls who are nice, but we have no privacy. Five people share our bathroom, and I didn't have hot water this morning. This costs $350 plus expenses (water, gas) the only meal includes breakfast. I don't want to cook nor have to look for a restaurant every night, that's too much like what I did in Florence, and I'd much rather have home cooking-I was spoiled at Natalia's!
I'm also having problems with money, it seems that I can't open an account by myself because I don't own property, and besides many people have advised me not to do that. So, I don't know what I'm going to do right now. I can use my bank card and Mastercard to get cash, and I'll ask Sr. Diehl what to do.
So today is fraught with problems, but with suerte things will get better soon!
More later! My address is Schenk@ubrect.edu.ar Please let Pete know, but tell him not to send me any of Craig's stuff
Love, Gretchen

Subject: got your message
Hi! I got your message. I wasn't sure if you had gotten it because I sent it Thur and didn't get a reply Fri and then was gone for the weekend. An yway, nice to hear from you, and glad we can communicate for free. I'll write more tomorrow because not much is happening now, although youcan tell Grandma i just went to Recoleta Cemetery and really liked it. It was like one I went to in Florence, but on a much grander scale.
Glad Ingrid's checkup went well. My health is fine, although I had to take some of those anti-diaharrhea tablets because I drink the water from the tap and it took my body a little while to adjust.
Ciao from the country of meat!
Gretchen
mom, I'm learning really bad Spanish: vos (tu), che, barbaro (fantastico), and the verbs are a little screwed up.I canunderstand for themost part, and will be delighted to frustrate my Spanish profs back home!

Dear Mom, Dad, Ed, Matt, Ingrid and Andy,
Hola! Things are going pretty well here. I opened an account today with Sr. Diehl and I can take money out when I want to. However, I'm going to send the bank check back to you to deposit in my account. The economy is not the most stable right now with Mexico's problems and the upcoming elections, so I'd rather have my money in an American bank and pay with things with Mastercard. I can also get cash with my cash station card when I need it for only a $2 fee, so I think that is a better way to go.
I spent the weekend at Nat's country club house and it was so nice to be out of the city. I rested, sunbathed and swam in the pileta in the backyard. I read a lot, mostly Argentine newspapers and magazines. And Nat cooked wonderful food for me. I really appreciate that since it's nearly impossible to cook in my casa. The kitchen is smaller than ours at home and has a table in it. And only one refegerator for 10 people. It's ridiculous. I asked Sr. Diehl if he knew anyone I could stay with, and he's going to think about it. No one who lives in the casa likes it, so I don't think there will be as many people in the winter, or even in April.
How was Ingrid's checkup at Shriner's? I hope that she's doing fine. It's lunch time for me, so I'm going to eat, I don't know where yet. I can't send this until later in the day, because the computers with e-mail are only open for about three hours every day, and not on weekends. At least they have it!
Hasta luego!

Dear family members, I got your letter yest, and read it happily. Today I went downtown to get my withdrawal forms (they're personalized) andsurprisingly I didn't have any problems or even a long wait. While I was trying to find the Correo Central, I went ba museum of the history of banking iBuenos Aires. Since itwas free I went in and was quite impres sed.
It had nicexhibits and was in good shape (I've been told that most of Buenos Aires' museums aren't too great) They had neat models of the banking district today and a hundred years ago. The banks are still the same!
I tried to get into the museum of the Casa Rosada, butthey wouldn't let me since I wasn't on a guided tour. Then I took the subte for the first time. It opened in the 19-teens,built by the British. It had a sort of British look to it.
The inside had wooden benches, and the trains got their electricity from
mabove. It costs 45 cents.
I walked around a lot today, looking at all sorts ofthings, so now I'm really tired. I don't do e-mail every day because of the weird hours and because I don't want to be too"hooked" on it.
Ciao from the land of piropo.
Love, Gretchen
I saved the above on the hard drive, so I had to retrieve it today, Friday, and couldn't send it yesterday.
Not a whole lot is happening, since I woke up not too long ago and had to come to the univ. I wanted to wake upearlier so I could do my laundry, but I didn't. I don't have any clean clothes. Que pena!

Subject: stories
Hello everyone! I've had quite a weekend, and have stories for all tastes. Don't read the ones that offend you.
First the bathroom story: Saturday I decided to go to La Plata, a provincial city about 30 miles south of the capital federal. Belgrano is a northern neighborhood, so first I had to take a bus (colectivo) to the southern train station. By the time I arrived I had to use the bathroom. So I go into the one at the train station and have to pay FIFTY CENTS just to use the bathroom. What a rip off. And the guys don't have to pay anything!
When I got to La Plata an hour and a half later, I had to go again. So I go into the bathroom and there are women selling toilet paper, but being clever I had saved some of my previous tp. When I got into the stall I noticed that the women had thrown their toilet paper into a garbage can, probably because the toilet pipes aren't too great. But I forgot to do that, and even after I flushed a whole lot of times it hadn't gone down. So then, (you won't believe this), I reached in and grabbed it, praying that enough water had flown through that it was relatively clean. It was so gross! And the bathroom didn't have sinks so I couldn't wash my hands. YYyyuuuuccckkk. But, being the ever-thoughtful traveler that I am, I had alcohol wipes with me and could sanitize my hands.
I'd rather find a tree, like I did this summer.
I spent a nice, but hot day in La Plata, visiting the Museo de ciencias naturales with some neat exhibits. When I returned to Bs As that night, Federico called me to invite me to a bar where his friend was playing in a band. So I told everyone in the house about it and we called other people and everyone agreed to meet there at 12:30.
Now starts my next story: trasnochar--an Argentine word that describes partying all night. Seven of us went to the bar at 12:30, with more supposedly coming. We walked in and no one was there. So I'm thinking, oh great, everyone is here because of me. Now they're just going to love me. We walk out and Federico and his friends arrive, looking a little scruffy, and I deduced that this wasn't the kind of place I frequent. Since the band wouldn't start until later, we went down the street to a bar and sat around, talking about the movie Tiempos Violentos (guess what it is:: Pulp Fiction). When we returned to the other bar an hour later the band was playing, but we had already decided that we wanted to go dancing instead. I went in to say ciao to Federico and found three more of our group. So we all left, and after much discussion went to a salsera, a dancing place for salsa.
As you know, I can cha-cha (or pretend to), but I definitely can't salsa! I tried, and a few people took pity on me and tried to teach me, but I was a bad student and ended up just doing my own thing. It was fun and I liked the music, but the guys weren't too great (no, I didn't dance with any, mom). At 4 I had had enough and was really hot, so I left with a three others. But the night wasn't over yet.
Last story: what we did after dancing.
We went to a cafe and sat outside (it's still warm
here!), and they ate (I wasn't hungry at all). One of the people was a guy from California and in the course of discussion we began talking about ear piercing and other body part piercing. Well, he unbuttoned his shirt and showed us his bellybutton ring. You learn new things everyday!
housing hunting is going--I found a nice senora and her mom who have a room, and they live close to the univ. Tonight I'm going to another house with a family to see how they are. The things I want: a family so I hear actual conversation and feel "loved", breakfast and dinner, my own room, and limited use of the telephone. And I'll pay $550 a month (prefer $500). I don't think that's too much, but it's not easy.
Went to my first class today-went well, nice prof, and he even knows Sen. Lugar and that he's running for President. he wanted to know how it was going, but I couldn't tell him: what is the news?
take care, un besito----

Dear Mom, Dad, Ed, Matt, Ingrid and Andy,
Took me awhile to write because life has been crazy here, without a doubt. I've been family shopping, and today I have to make my decision. Yet it's a strange situation. One family lives close to the univ, has 2 kids a little younger than me and are really nice. Yet they aren't sure that they want a student living with them. The senora was supposed to call me in los proximos dias, but it's been 2 days now with no word. So yesterday I went to see another family, also really nice, but they seem like tv addicts and live about 40 min away from the univ. It's not an easy choice, especially since I don't really know if I have a choice. I'm going to make some phone calls soon!
I haven't really had any adventures in the past few days, but I do have things to tell you that happened to me. (And none are gross this time!)
First, the sidewalks have monsters. It's true. Everyday at least one grabs a shoe and makes me trip. And they can hide well because the sidewalks are in horrible shape. I always try to act nonchalant after tripping, but feel so embarrassed. At least they don't target me specifically--everyday I see someone else trip on the sidewalks too!
The other day I didn't have anything left in the heladera (refrigerador) to drink except some pomelo (grapefruit soda). But I didn't really like it because it was so strong. Since I didn't have anything else, I got it out, commenting to Hector, a guy from Panama, that I didn't really like it. He looked at the bottle and pointed to a little label that I hadn't seen-- concentrate, dilute with three parts water. I had to laugh! No wonder it tasted so bad!
I've been spending a lot of time in classes, so much that today I decided I just couldn't handle it anymore and that I'm just not going to have Friday classes. (It's nice to be able to do that!) Monday I went to Compared Foreign Policy, an interesting class, from 8:30-10:30. Tuesday I don't have classes. Wednesday I went to Argentine and Lat. Am. Economy, which began at 8:30. At 10:30 the prof left, and most of the students, but they left their stuff. Sensing that something was wrong, I asked a girl if class was over. She said no--we had a 15 minute break and then had to come back until 12:30. I couldn't believe it! Four hours of classes! I was supposed to have another class at 11:00, but now there was no way I could make it. It seems that the professors can't take it that long- for the second part we had a different professor, and he didn't enunciate well, so I could hardly understand him. I copied the notes of the girl next to me the entire time. Needless to say, my brain was fried!
Wed evening I have Arg. and Lat. Am. Lit, a class totally of extranjeros, but it's nice because we're all in the same boat! It was easy compared to the others. (Wed is half-price movie night and we went to the perfecto asesino (the Professional)-don't go, it's horrible).
Thur I went early to find my Political Geography class. Since all of my other classes were in the wrong aulas (classrooms), I expected more of the same. When I got to the classroom which was indicated on my schedule, I asked if this was the right class. A girl answered me really snottily in English telling me I should just go to the Exchange Office to find out. I resisted saying something really bad back, or even saying that I was of some other nationality and how dare she insult me by insinuating that I knew English. (People usually guess I'm Swiss, German or French, hardly ever do they guess that I'm American, which beats me because I like to wear my Asics running shoes.)
I knew I had to go to the office anyway, so I did and got a different room number in a different building. I went there and no one was in the room. I groaned. I opened the door next to it, where there was a class, and saw lots of math stuff on the chalkboard. Oops! As I was going back downstairs, a girl offered to help me, and she asked another prof where the class was. He didn't know, asked someone else, and 10 min later they still didn't know, as that was the aula for that year. (The students stay in the same room and the professors come to them. Everyone in the carrera has to take exactly the same classes.) So the professor told me he was teaching Economic Geography and I was welcome to go to that class. So that's what I did, finding a German student. The students were the same ones that I have Compared Foreign Policy with, and in the course of chatting, I found out that we had the second part of that class after the present one. I couldn't believe it! I had had no idea. So I stayed and by 12:00 my brain was fried again.
Got to go, there's a class.
Back again: my brain is still fried because in order to get photocopies of articles (very common because books are so expensive here--no one cares about copyright laws). in el centro, about an hour away on colectivo. Nothing is simple here. I just hope I don't have to go every week to get new things. Oh, I had to pay for the syllabus, well the photocopying of it. Definitely a different system!
Some ideas for typefaces, Dad: q-tips, fire-fighting tools (I can't remember what they're called now, but there are 4 main ones) ballerinas, shoes, buildings, giraffes, brushes and combs. I had a list but lost it, so I can't remember any others right now.
Hope your weekend is fun. I don't have anything planned,
so I don't know what I'll do. No problem, I need time to chill. Hasta luego un abrazo
Gretchen

Subject: nueva casa
Dear Mom, Dad, Ed, Matt, Ingrid and Andy,
Hola! I am going to move Saturday to a house that's only about 6 blocks from where I'm now. It's not a house, but an apartment, but that's what they call them here. (There are some really nice houses in Belgrano, similar to River Forest in one section. I like to go jogging there because it's prettier and the sidewalks are in better condition.) The father is a doctor, the mother an arquitect (but business is slow now so she helps her husband), their son Diego is 20 and studying computer science and their daughter Lucia is 16. They seem very nice, and they're all small people. I'll have my own room and bathroom and eat dinner with them. We'll see how it goes!
Mom, you're right about the women who feel they need to wear high heels should get a life. I've seen two women now with the most deformed feet, with the toes crossed so they could get them in pointy shoes. What a price to pay!
The Argentines are primarily European and look down on Indians. They are extremely racist as the population is so homogenous, but they prefer talking about the racism in the U.S. The men are usually not gentlemen, not moving an inch on the sidewalk so others have to walk around them, and everyone drives as if they one the road. Most of the secondary intersections don't have stop lights (and stop signs don't mean anything), so the cars slow down a little, or if they're in a big hurry just blare their horns and go even faster through the intersection. It's scary to watch. People do not respect each other here.
I haven't heard anything about O.J. Simpson here. What I read in the diarios is about futbol, the economy, and lately the Panamerican Games. Not much else, oh except for fashion and movies, both of which are really important. Movie theatres show the first movie at 1 in the afternoon and the last one at 1 in the morning. American movies are subtitled, and cost the same as in Chicago.
Ed, you're lucky you get to swim. I miss swimming, so do extra laps for me. Are you having fun pulling people out of the water? How many bruises do you have? Have you swam in your clothes yet? That was one of my favorite parts, although I thought the part where we tied knots in our clothes and blew them up was more than a little realistic.
Not much happened this weekend--went out Saturday night to a very pretty disco, outdoors, but we didn't stay long, and I got to bed early, 5:30. I only can do that once in awhile, unlike the Europeans who love to go out nearly every night!
I miss you all. Take care,
Love,
gretchen

Dear everyone,
how are things going? matt, ed, and andy, have a fun spring break. it's still hot here, in the 80's and sunny every day.
Ed, having fun cooking? Last night two of my house mates cooked for me. I've made it known to everyone that I don't really like to cook, so sometimes they feed me. I respond with treats from the panaderia next door. I'm a very good client--I just can't resist all those delicious looking breads. Bread is definitely much better here than in the U.S.
I contacted Phil McGraw's friend a couple days ago, and we're going to try to get together soon. He seemed very nice on the telephone.
Why do my classes not make sense??? I am calmer this week, even though when I went to my Mon morn class the prof said that he wanted to change class to wed. morn. Since all the other students have the same class on wed, it would be simply a switch. Unfortunately I have a different class on Wed, so I don't know what I'll do if we do switch, as I really like both classes. I did go to Periodismo en Argentina last night, so if I have to drop a class, I will still have the minimum four. I'm still searching for a syllabus for one class-the professors use about 4 fotocopiadoras in Belgrano and others throughout the city. It is really ridiculous!
My most fun moment this week was track practice. I went to the Sports Department last week and got in touch with the coach. Monday he drove me to the beautiful practice fields, regrettable the only ones of that calibre in all of the capital. I entered after memorizing the name of another girl on the team since I'm not on the list yet. So now my name is Monica Jauregi.
It felt so good to not worry about getting run over, not seeing high heels and mini-mini skirts, and just running and sweating and watching every one else do the same. The team is small and informal--I'm only going to practice twice a week, and practices aren't too hard, although my hamstrings sure were sore the next day.
Hopefully I can watch Forrest Gump tonight. Last night I watched Dead Again on HBO ole, with subtitles. I saw it a long time ago but didn't remember the ending until the movie had almost ended. It was quite enjoyable a second time.
Ciao (or Chau like they spell it here, but I think it
looks like a dog's name),
Un beso
Gretchen

Subject: noticias de margarita
Dear Mom, Dad, Ed, Matt, Ingrid, and Andy,
Got your message, Mom, thanks. I'm no longer Monica, but Margarita Schenk. At least to enter the pista. The coach absolutely could not pronounce my name, so at last I gave up trying. I just hope they don't ask me for any identification! Running is going well, although I have new muscles talking to me. I really like going to a quieter place where I can run and not have to look out for dog poop. oh-the family where I'll be has a dog that looks like a rat. It's really ugly. I'm moving tomorrow. The address is Conesa 1820, 1426 Capital Federal, Argentina. Phone, I think, is 011-541-787-4763. Capital
Federal means the city of Buenos Aires, as opposed to the province. I also can receive mail at the university address, as the office has a box for all of the extranjero's mail.
So Elizabeth's a klepto? She's always telling me about how people steal her stuff, like her underwear. I just try to nod understandingly. I don't know what to say!
I went to finalize my classes today-and really don't know if I have 4 or 5. The advisor isn't too with it, and it doesn't help that the system is a mess. I am also going to have an advisor to help me with my research paper about la llegada de democracia en argentina en '83, so that will help immensely in getting my honors paper done. I'll have a version in English and one in Spanish.
Today it's been rainy, and the last two days cold. Otono has arrived! This Sunday we have the welcoming party at the club of Belgrano, so hopefully it will be a little warmer.
I really liked Forrest Gump, it was a good story ( a little predictable at times), but got across the history of the U.S. I laughed a lot more than the ARgentines because of some of the cultural and historical references that aren't known so much, and then I laughed because they didn't know them. We sat on the stairs to watch the movie, because our seats were to the side and in the second row and we couldn't see anything. The uncomfortableness was worth it.
Have a good weekend, I've a lot of reading to do. But I don't have all my books because they haven't arrived yet. Go figure! I'm getting to the point where I'm really chilled--I can't control it, so I don't worry.
Hasta luego,
Love, Gretchen

Dear Hoosiers,
How are you?
I'm really tired right now, I woke up early because my room is on a corner and has white blinds and all the light comes through. I went to the univ. and finally paid my matriculation and for the first month. I've been trying to do that for a couple of weeks. Then I went to the building where I have my polisci classes and asked about a class change, since the advisor we have for international students didn't seem to have the right day. I was right, she didn't, and hopefully now everything is okay. I'll find out tomorrow when I walk into class and ask, "Es esta clase Economia Argentina?" Usually someone answers me. (Actually all the time, but only after I've asked a few times. I think an Argentine would say it differently, but I don't know how.)
Then I went downtown. I had a list of places I wanted to go to, like the Argentine tourist office and a bookstore, but I lost it. Fortunately after wandering around for awhile I found a place with tourist info and asked and got a free map and guide to museums. I also got the directions to the Lincoln Library, which the American Embassy owns and maintains. 80% of the materials are in English. After going through the security check and leaving my camera with the guard (I guess the books contain top-secret info that I can't take pictures of---but I can photocopy), I went in with an English girl. We were fortunate because you can only register to take out books the first five days of the month.
I read the NY Times, the Miami Herald, the Wall Street Journal, Time, Audubon (interesting articles on fire fighting in the West and the valuable microbes found in the hot springs of Yellowstone that were only recognized as valuable in the last few years). I couldn't read anymore after that, so I went to see what books they have. I think this is possibly the only library in Argentina with an open-stack system. The others have mean librarians who terrorize people with their stares alone.
I also bumped into a guy named George (from the U.S., studying in Argentine for 5 years) who I had met doing e-mail another day and he said he had tried to call me last night to invite me to dinner with him and his friend, who I had supposedly also met in e-mail. I couldn't remember that at all, and eventually we realized that he had talked to the other Gretchen, who is from Washington D.C.
The other Gretchen and I were at the Club of the University of Belgrano, in the province (meaning outside of the city limits), for the fiesta de bienvenida.
In the morning nearly all the extranjeros filled a bus and were driven to this club, where we saw one of the strangest exhibitions ever. A band marched around the field playing, we all walked with the flags of our countries, and then runners with flags of the different facultades (Ingeniera, Ciencias Economicas, Ciencias Agrarias, Derecho, etc) ran in figure eights. Some people talked, but we were all so busy taking pictures that we didn't listen. We did pay attention to the games that the facultades, including the Estudiantes extranjeros, played. The first game consisted of pushing a great big cart with half of the team on it to one end of the field, turning around and coming back. It was quite hilarious, as the people who were supposed to stand on the cart couldn't keep their balance and experienced a big domino effect. Four-way tug of war was next, followed by soccer with a humongous ball that everyone kept in the air with their hands.
After everyone had returned to their seats, to our surprise guys on horses entered and tractors carrying pigs, sheep, chickens, and iguanas. The Argentines oohed and ahhed and we all looked at each other. What was going on? Things got even stranger. About 20 toros entered, looking quite vicious. I got a little nervous, as this was a field surrounded by bleachers filled with people, but with no fences. One of the caballeros mounted a toro and tried to ride it. Finally they all left leaving the field filled with poop.
But the festivities weren't over: 6 dancers came out, wearing the worst uniforms-white tops with no bras. It was quite inappropriate for the occasion, but everyone danced with them, seemingly not caring. The Argentines didn't make comments that I could here, but all of us certainly did!
Finally it was time to eat, and after that the sports began voleibol, basquet, tenis, hockey, futbol, ping-pong, aljadrez (chess), and atletismo. I decided to try atletismo, so I went to the track and found my coach and learned that the contest was either 80m or 1200m, three times around the track. I elected the longer and won! Later, after playing volleyball for fun, I got a little trophy. We all left in a good mood, slightly rosy from the sun, and definitely not ready to start the week!
When I got back to the house, I ate a ton, I was so hungry. I've hardly been in this new house at all, I'm always out doing something! That's good, although I love chatting with Diego and Lucia. They are fanatics of TV and know more American shows than I do. The room is very small, but has what I need. The family is a little strange, but I can't quite put my finger on it. I'll tell you more later!
Love, Gretchen

Hello! I think I finally know my new address: Conesa 1820-piso 6, 1428 Capital Federal, Argentina. If my mail is 1426 it should still get to me.
Yesterday I went to the Biblioteca del Centro Lincoln, which is 80% English. I read the NY Times, Miami Herald, Wall Street Journal and others and caught up a little on U.S. news. I also read all the articles about Argentina's problems with the economy.
Today I went to Economia argentina, but in a different class because another class changed days. It took me some time and several questions yesterday to figure it out, but everything went well and these students were
very friendly. After class one girl took me to the photocopy shop (a different one than all the ones I've been to) and I finally got the syllabus and lots of reading material. (Copyright laws are blatantly ignored here. Speaking of books, the 3-D images are very popular and very expensive.)
More later, I've got tons of homework, or so it seems.
Love, Gretchen

Hola! Many of the Argentines who study English ask me why Americans use "hi" instead of "hello". If they have studied British English, they have a hard time understanding. Both British English and American English are taught here.
My new family seems very nice. I especially like talking with Lucia, who explains things to me about Argentine life. Yesterday I helped Oscar, the papa, translate a bill from a U.S. clinic. He received two the same day of the same bill and didn't understand if it was the same or if he had to pay twice. When I explained all of the joys of the U.S. health system he couldn't believe it.
I'm really not in the house very much, as I'm busy doing other things. I want to start traveling more on weekends, to take advantage of my four-day weekends. My Spanish is good enough now and I have enough confidence to do that. I usually get to the house about 9 at night, and we eat dinner then or a little later. Dinner is a strange affair, as the family doesn't really eat together. Susana cooks and we start eating, or at least whoever is there, and then someone else wanders in, and then they get up and wander away. Definitely different than home!
The name of the Argentine currency is dollars. Just kidding! It's really pesos, but many businesses accept dollars without any extra charge. One of the challenges of the Arg. economy is to base it on pesos rather than dollars.
Trees are remarkably similar here as in Indiana, with sycamores, boxelders, ashes, willows, a few oaks. There are also palm trees and magnolias. The grass looks almost exactly the same, with three-leaf clovers and the other normal weeds.
I have to write a 20 page paper for my Politica Exterior Comparada class. My poli sci profs at Rosary would never dream of that! It should keep me busy!
Most of the U.S. bestsellers are sold here also, and we see the movies with Spanish subtitles. Sometimes they are really funny, as a lot of things in English just don't translate.
More later, Love,
Gretchen

Howdy everyone!
It's almost the fin de semana! Wed was the birthday of Susana, la mama, so we had a little party. It was fun, but it didn't start until 10:30. I was a little tired the next morning in my class.
Classes are going well, I'm understanding more. I have a lot to read this weekend. I'm learning all sorts of interesting things in Economics, like ingreso and consumo and inversion. The problem is that I don't really know how to say them in English. My most interesting class is probably Politica Exterior Comparada, because I get to see Argentina's view of the world. It's a lot of fun to notice the differences.
It's been raining a lot here, and it's no fun then. I have to buy a rain coat or umbrella because I don't like being wet and walking.
More next week-que el fin de semana vaya bien!
Love, Gretchen

Subject: uruguay
Hola! It's freezing here! After a week of rain the temperatures have dropped drastically and everyone'sshivering.(But the short skirts are still everywhere.)
Sunday I went to Colonia, Uruguay with Gretchen, from Washington D.C.(She worked on the hill for two years andhas interesting tidbits of Wash-ington gossip.) We took aboat to go over and were on the water for about 2 and a half hours. The day was overcast and the river a muddy brown. In Colonia we ate lunch on the boat (part of the package deal) and then took a citytour, visiting the Plaza de Toros, which is crumbling but still has interesting Moorish architecture. They don't have bull fights in Arg. Next to it were capitalistic vendors with lots of sweaters, jewelry and leather goods. We stopped at another feria with many more vendors, but I preferred watching a local festival with dancers in colorful outfits.
For the last part of the tour we went to the Barrio Historico, which is where the Portuguese settled in the seventeenth century. Everything is really old (naturally), and several of the buildings have been made into museums. The roads were of very sharp rocks that made walking a bit dangerous (especially for the guide in her high heel platform shoes). It was a very peaceful part except for the walking vendors.
We had the afternoon free, and Gretchen and I didn't know what to do. (It's strange for both of us to call each other Gretchen. And we're both Scorpios--the Argentines are fascinated by astrology and will talk and talk about characteristics of the signs and what their relatives are)
So we sat on the old wall that used to form part of the defense of the old city and later walked around the streets. There wasn't too much to do. At the end of the day it started raining, and the return boat ride was very turbulent. I was so tired that I dozed off for awhile. The boat was huge, with room for roughly 400 people, with a cafeteria, huge duty-free shops (one pound M & M's-$5!) and space for some cars.
Since the voyage was international, we had to go through a lot of bureacracy, filling out forms, paying extra taxes, standing in line, etc. All that only to cross the river!
Tomorrow I'm taking off on another adventure, to Mendoza, the heart of adventure sports in Argentina. The trip is through a student travel agency and Gretchen, Michelle and Connie are also going (all from the U.S.), plus other students from who knows where. We'll be camping, trekking, and who knows what else. We have an itinerary, but I doubt that we'll be following it too closely. Mendoza is wine country and basically a lot of desert, but with a great irrigation system. It's at the base of the Andes. I'm really excited, even though the bus ride is about 14 hours! I'll tell you all about it next week.
Hope Grandma's car arrives soon! Elizabeth doesn't really consider herself Catholic, so I doubt that she'll take communion.
Good luck in bowling, Ed. The trick is not to look at the pins but the dots on the floor and aim the ball there. It takes some practice but in the long run it's easier. (And I even scored 140 one time!)
I probably won't write until next week. Besos,
Love,
Gretchen

Hola familia! Felices Pascuas! This is a long one!
Gracias para tu carta, mama. Siguiente es una narativa de mi viaje a Mendoza. Los omnibuses son mas o menos como Greyhound.
The govt owed me money in taxes, about $100 I think, so that's why I'm receiving checks.
The concert sounds nice. There are quite a few bands in Argentina, but I have yet to listen to one. I miss my trumpet, so to recompense I bought a harmonica and have expanded my repertoire to Jingle Bells, Elvis Presley, Rolling Stones and others. It's quite funny. The family hasn't complained yet.
Bs As did receive a lot of rain-every day for a week. I don't think anything flooded, although traditionally the whole southern part of the city used to flood regularly. However in the province pueblos that have never flooded before were wiped out. They don't have emergency aid here, so it will be difficult for them to recover.
How was Easter? Did you have good weather? Fun easter egg hunts? I can't believe how big chocolate is here--much more than in the U.S., although Hershey's is no where to be found (but M & M's, Cadbury, Suichard, and many others.)
What a weekend! I loved leaving the city!
Wednesday night Connie, Gretchen, Michelle and I left on a bus to Mendoza with the other 37 people of our tour. We drove all the way across Argentina but fortunately I slept during the night. I woke to a spectacular sunrise followed by miles and miles of desert-like land, with no trees in sight. As we got closer to Mendoza, irrigation projects supported vineyards that continued to the horizon. Slowly we advanced into the beautiful foothills of the Andes and arrived at our campsite about noon the next day.
After eating spaghetti for lunch (the campground provided all our meals, so I didn't even see a fire), we went for a walk, and I delighted in identifying the trees, all of them imported and planted. The most colorful were the poplars, as their leaves were changing to a bright gold that contrasted vividly with the surrounding mountains.
Friday we were awakened first by the wandering chickens and their loud "Cock a doodle doos" (they didn't pronounce it quite right-or maybe it was just the accent) before the sunrise, and later by our guide. (Three came from the travel agency and we had one main one in the campground, plus others for the excursions.) I was freezing cold, so I didn't mind getting up. A couple hours later we were taken further into the mountains and hiked a couple hours to a remote waterfall. It was enchanting, complete with a cave behind the waterfall. (Unfortunately it was a tiny entrance so no one even attempted it.) We danced around in the cold waterfall, drank the water (I wasn't too sure about that, but the guides assured us that it was okay--it wasn't), and climbed up to the top of the waterfall. My new hiking boots were great, as I had a good grip on the rocks and could scaddadle all over, and did.
The ground cover was a lot of thorny bushes, some weeds, and many cacti. As is my tradition when there are cacti, I stepped on one, but I have improved-the spines didn't even break the skin! We saw a condor over one peak, circling, but no other animals (except an immature leech that a guy from Wales found in the stream). After an impressive lunch with both cold and hot food, we had siesta, and I took the opportunity to climb some more, feeling a great peace in the mountains.
Later in the afternoon we took a different trail and went to the river, where we put on life vests and helmets and picked up oars to go RAFTING! It always looked really exciting and I wasn't disappointed at all. The river had lots of white water, and we went over rocks in our boat of 9 persons forwards, backwards, and sideways, so everyone got drenched. The water was freezing, as it was from melted snow higher in the mountains, but we didn't care with the impressive vistas. We had a great time.
When we got back to camp we took hot showers (a deluxe camp in my opinion!) and rested before dinner, served at 10. Afterwards, Michelle and I decided to take advantage of the full moon and took a walk on a solitary road with a view of the moon reflecting off the snow-peaked mountains.
I woke up nice and toasty the next morning with my layers of a t-shirt, two sweaters and sweatshirt, ready for the day's activity: horseback riding. From the first moment I mounted my horse, I had a sore butt, and knew that it would only get sorer. I was right, but I didn't think too much about that as we rode out of the tree-lined road and into the mountains for two hours. We stopped in a meadow where all we could see was more mountains, and our guides prepared an asado for us: delicious meat, along with salad and bread. After eating and a siesta, we rode the horses two hours to return, but the time went fast as I dreamed about taking my horse over the next mountain, and the following, and the following, until I arrived in Chile. I also identified the plants on the way, and to my surprise, quite a few of the flowers were still blooming.
When we got back to camp, Gretchen and I walked to a little shop to buy a newspaper of the region. The owner only had the paper from two days earlier, but that didn't stop her from charging full price! The experience was worth more than the paper!
Since it was our last night there was a dance, but I left early as the smoke really bothered my eyes.
The next morning (Easter!) I got up when I heard the chickens to take a walk before leaving. I walked on the road towards Chile and after an hour was rewarded by seeing pink peaks, as the sun touched the snow high above me. I sat down and watched the colors before turning back and following the unused railroad tracks.
When I got back to camp I saw a couple of very fat bunnies hopping around. Quite appropriate! We took down the camp and went into Mendoza, where we split up. Gretchen and I visited several of the plazas, including one with beautiful tiles and identification of the trees, and also a big, beautiful church. Everything was closed, so we couldn't even buy any of the famous and cheap Mendoza wine, so we wandered around a while longer, waiting for our bus to take us back to Buenos Aires.
Bus travel in Argentina is very popular and quite comfortable. A steward served us dinner (equivalent to airplane food), and the seats reclined so we could sleep. We also watched two movies. I was impressed by the endless shrubs that were on both sides of the road for miles and miles. It was Nebraska times 10.
When I woke up in the morning we were in the Provincia of Buenos Aires. Back to city life. I prefer the mountains much more.
Hasta luego!
Besos,
Gretchen

Glad to hear that Easter egg hunting was fun.
I don't know why I have a citi bank master card. I don't need it so pitch it.
Edward: since you're interested in money, i will tell you this. Today in my econ class i asked the prof why ARgentina has one peso denominations both in bills and in coins. He told me they are phasing out the bills--the coins last much longer. Somewhere I read that in the U.S. they want to get $1 coins, but they need a good design. The government is spending thousands of dollars every year to house Susan B Anthony dollars that were taken out of ciculation due to their unpopularity. The peso coin is gold in the middle and silver around the outside. I'll send you a 1 peso bill so you have something that will be extinct!
Dad: We're studying the Modelo de tres brechas in econ, but I do not know what that is in English, something like the Model of three gaps. It divides the economy into public, private, and foreign and shows how their is an equilibrium between them. we are studying other stuff that i am not too clear on, but i will ask you about that later.
people waiting to use this, so chau! Love, Gretchen

Hello everyone! How are you doing? It sounds like the whole town was affected by Mr. Burvan's death. It is hard to believe.
Time for the rummage sale! I wish I could be there! Keep your eyes open for any musical instruments or camping/hiking equipment por favor. I hope there are lots of treasures.
So you have a touch-tone phone. I have to admit that I prefer them. As for church, the majority of Argentines say that they're Catholic, but they don't practice. However, when I go to church, it's always packed (except the early morning Sunday services). The churches usually have 2 or 3 services Sunday evening, taking account of the Argentine nightlife.
Matthew, braces aren't that bad. Nearly all my friends had them and told me that. Just don't throw your retainer away too many times, I remember helping friends dig through the garbage trying to find it. Really gross, especially since the garbage is usually sloppy food from school lunch.
I didn't do really exciting things this weekend, but I did eat out every night. I went with Phil McGraw's cousin and his Argentine wife to el Palacio de las Papas Fritas Friday night. It's a well-known Argentine eating spot, although many fewer people eat there now (250, down from 1200 meals served a few years ago-prices rose). We talked about Argentina for awhile, and the bad reputation the Univ of Belgrano has of bad students who don't want to learn. To me, the students are equal to the students in my classes in the U.S. those who want to study and those to find their mates. Since a lot of models and children of well-known people attend Belgrano, the vainness is very apparent. Since there was a general strike in Argentina on Friday, I couldn't take the bus home afterwards, but fortunately the trains were running. The strike had political motives, against Menem. I've talked to a lot of people about what they think will happen in the election, and many of them hope that Menem will not win the 45% he needs in the first election and that there will be a second election. I don't think that will happen, as he seems to have a wide margin.
Sat night, after a horrifyingly boring day at the Rotary Conference, I went to an asado at the house of an Argentine friend. I went with Gretchen, and there were four other people there. The food was fabulous (as it usually is in Argentina--I ought to learn how to cook) and afterwards we played Pictionary--en castellano. Very difficult to guess what the pictures were using spanish words.
Sun I went to the campo--the country club of the univ to watch the hijo of Sr. Diehl play rugby, better than I imagined, and in the evening I went to Natalia's house, I hadn't seen her for awhile. I finally got to rest Monday before going downtown to look for resources for a paper on the Andean Pact.
That's my exciting news for now! This weekend is a long one as the first of May is Dia del Trabajador, so I hope to go somewhere. It seems like they have many more holidays in Argentina!
Good luck at the Rummage Sale!

Hello one and all! I typed a long letter but didn't save it right so I can't retrieve it now on the e-mail computers, so I don't know if you will get it or not (depends if I can get a computer--15 aren't quite enough for a university with 8000 students, and if i can figure out how to save it).
Last Thursday I went to my first tango class-it was great fun. I hope to learn and remember a lot more. We're learning the traditional way, of improvisation, but first some of the basic moves. Not too many guys, so they dance all the time while the girls take turns.
I have to finish a paper today about the countries of the Andean Pact. Some of the other students helped me to correct my numerous errors. It seems like I'll never know Spanish really well. It's a bit frustrating.
Dad, what are the causes of inflation? We're studying that in economy now, and I'd like to know if what we learn is the same as what you teach. It's difficult to read the book we have, especially when it starts using lots of economic terms.
Didn't travel far this weekend, only to Tigre, a river delta north of the city. Took the Tren de la Costa to get there, recently restored with 120 million dollars. It is very modern and CLEAN (but probably not for long). It was packed all weekend. Tigre was a quiet little turisty town, but the mosquitoes weren't so quiet. The mosquitoes here are absolutely horrrible this year.
Days are getting much shorter--now I wake up and it's still dark (they
don't use daylight savings time anymore).
How is everyone doing? Sounds like the rummage sale was a lot of fun, wish I could have been there (they don't have them here).
More later if I can find it,

Howdy family! You probably think I've been lost, but no, my unerring sense of direction is still fine. (you guys are to the south, no?)
Hope ya' all are fine. I'm printing out my Rotary report and will send you a copy via e-mail. I'd like to hear your comments.
I had fun this weekend, and I didn't even go out at night or leave the city. Saturday I went to the Reserva Ecologica en la Costanera Sur, which is five minutes from the Casa Rosada and downtown. It's a large ecological reserve with over 200 species of birds sighted there. It's only been open since 1986, and has an interesting history. The area was first the balneario, or swimming hole for the portenos, but in the 1970s they declared the water too polluted. So they closed it off and began dumping highway and building refuse there. One of the military governments developed a plan to build government buildings there, to make it into a sort of Manhattan, but alas the funds did not exist, so the area was kind of forgotten. Then in the 1980's they found that numerous species of birds had started coming to this deserted area, and someone with a few brains decided to declare it a natural park. (I say that because another area that was filled in had tennis courts built on it and now they are unusable.) So something good can come from mismanagement.
I went with a guided tour and learned the names of some birds and plants and basically had a good time. It was really odd seeing the tall grasses, typical of the early pampas, with the skyscrapers in the background. No one has planted anything there, so it's a developing ecosystem.
On the way back I took a colectivo instead of the train. While I was looking at my recently purchased bird identification book, I looked up and was surprised to see construction workers working on a Saturday night. Then I was even more surprised as I heard a loud crunch and we came to a sudden stop. I looked around, and everyone seemed okay, although startled. Some of the people got up to leave the bus, so I followed them, but the bus driver wouldn't let us off. He got out and we all peered out the window. We had crashed into a bulldozer, a parked bulldozer! Fortunately only the back of the bus had crashed into it, and the bus was only missing a chunck about the size of a toaster. Since the bus kept rolling, we continued merrily along. This is the third bus I've been in that's crashed into something else! This time was the most serious, as the other times we didn't even stop.
Sunday afternoon I went to the arts and crafts fair in Recoleta that's there every Sunday to buy some little stuff. I was with Connie and her "brother" Anibal. We walked around an exhibition of Bob Marley, which was absolutely packed with people. Impressive, since I didn't even know who he was. It was a relaxing afternoon, but when we returned, we had another adventure with transportation. Anibal was driving and we followed another car, making a left hand turn. Left hand turns generally are not allowed in the city, you have to drive around the block to go in the other direction. Well, the cops were there and we had to pull over (there isn't a word in castellano for that, because it doesn't really exist like it does in the U.S.) The cop came and asked for his identification, and Anibal politely gave it to him. The cop explained the violation and said that he would have to pay a fine, but if he wanted, he could "talk to the sargeant in the car". Anibal said, no, and explained to us in a low voice as the cop stalled and walked around with his id that he was asking for a coima, a bribe, but that he wasn't going to pay it. We waited, and another jeep pulled over. The guy got out and did talk with the seargent and left soon after. Then another cop came over and asked where Anibal was from and where we were from. He told him the United States, so the cop asked Anibal to get out of the car. Connie and I were worried that we would get him in trouble, but he returned. He said that the cop didn't want us to get a bad impression of Argentine police, so he had asked him to get out of the car before asking for the coima (another time). Too late, we had already seen enough!
Things are going well here. The leaves are falling and everything is very grey. Including the fashions. Blah, blah. They don't have chocolate chips here. Lots and lots of chocolate, from the U.S. and Switzerland and Argentina and Brasil, but none in chips. Cereal is becoming an "in" thing, with Kelloggs the biggest producer.
Elections are in a week and there's lots of propaganda, but apparently not as much as in previous years, probably due to lack of party money. My prediction remains that Menem will win in the first round, although Bordon is apparently gaining. However, I think that when people go to vote on Sunday, they'll remember that the economy is more or less stable and they won't want to take a risk. We'll see, this is Argentina, and the people here have experienced more economic and political regimes than in nearly any other place in the world. They are willing to put up with more than most people.
hasta luego
love,
Gretchen

I have been in Argentina for two months and am having a great time. I arrived the second of March to get accustomed to the language and culture before the 10-day orientation at the University of Belgrano. Forty other foreign students and I participated in the orientation, learning about the organization of the university, the history and culture of Argentina, and some idiosyncrasies of Argentine Spanish. At the end of the orientation we selected our classes and started attending them March 20.
Classes
I am currently enrolled in five classes at the Universidad de Belgrano (UB). Three of the classes are regular university classes: Argentine and Latinamerican economy, compared foreign policy and economic geography. The other two classes are interdisciplinary classes, offered by the university especially for foreign students, although Argentine students are welcome to enroll. These classes are journalism in Argentina and Argentine and Hispanicamerican literature.
The first several weeks of class I only understood the main idea of the lecture. Progressively I understand more and more of what the professor is saying. Although I still do not understand everything, I do consider that I have adapted well to the classes and am making good progress. The professors and other students are glad to help me.
The classes are interesting and are similar in format to what I had in the U.S., albeit the classes last much longer (up to four hours). The professors at UB are excellent. And despite the fact that the University of Belgrano has an elitist reputation, many of the students are quite friendly.
The amount of papers and reading is comparable to what I do in the United States for my political science major. I have found that it is very difficult to do research here, as the libraries are small and have strict lending policies. Since books are expensive, photocopying is common, however locating the correct photocopy shop where the professor left the reading material can be difficult, as many abound near the university, and each professor uses a different one.
Other activities. I have joined the track team of UB, and practice with other university and high school students on an excellent track close to the university where Argentine's top athletes train. I am also taking tango classes, which are really enjoyable, although I will not be dancing competitive tango anytime soon.
Argentina
Although Argentina is a large country, one third of the population of 33 million people are concentrated in Grand Buenos Aires. Traditionally there has always been a conflict between the federal capital of Buenos Aires and the interior. This division continues today as the porte=A4os, or residents of the capital are more concerned with interacting with the rest of the world and the residents of the interior are more concerned with leading their own lives. As a result
Culture. Buenos Aires is a city that never sleeps; I see as many people
in the streets at three in the morning as at three in the afternoon. Argentines read newspapers and magazines in great quantities, and kioskos selling these items are located every several blocks. Movies are popular entertainment, with the majority of the movies from the United States and subtitled. Theatre is another attraction, as is the famous tango, although popular U.S. and Latin american songs are played in the discos until morning.
Food. Argentina has almost always been known as a meat country, and it is true that meat can be found at every restaurant. Two of my favorites are classic cuts: asado (barbecue) and bife de chorizo (steak). Empanadas (meat pies) and alfajores (small cakes) also top my list. Vegetables are abundant, and bread is a staple, found in many varieties. Argentines eat four meals a day: breakfast, lunch, merienda, also called tea, and dinner. Dinner is often eaten at nine or ten in the evening, sometimes much later.
Transportation. The traffic in Buenos Aires is incredibly horrible. Traffic violations are common, yet official reprimands are not. I travel using the colectivos, or buses, which traverse the entire city and most of the country. Buenos Aires is a good city to walk in, and I walk a minimum of two miles every day, as do many other Argentines.
People. The people of Buenos Aires are very reserved on the streets, and many do not have respect for others or for their surroundings, littering as they go. In their homes, the people are totally different, showing their friendly personalities. My first week in Argentina I stayed with Natalia Cella, an Argentine friend whom I met in the U.S. She showed me great porte=A4a hospitality. My Rotary sponsor, Sr. Arturo Diehl and his family welcomed me into their home, as did other Argentine friends whom I have met at the university. The family with whom I live, the Mitres, make me feel at home. I accompany them to some activities and learn a lot while talking with the children, Diego, 20, and Lucia, 16. They explain the background of TV shows to me and other peculiarities of Argentine culture. The father is a doctor and follows politics closely, so at times we discuss politics. The mother is an architect and has taught me how to cook empanadas and other Argentine food.
Sights. Since Buenos Aires is the capital of Argentina, it has the buildings associated with such a place. The Casa Rosada, or Casa del Gobierno, is where the president works. The Congreso houses the Congress, and the Tribunales is the location of the courts. Nearby is the Calle Florida, a popular, although expensive shopping promenade. To the south is San Telmo, the old part of Buenos Aires with many mansions and an outdoor fair on Sundays complete with tango dancers. Further south is the picturesque La Boca, a brightly painted neighborhood with many Italians. In the other direction, to the north of the downtown is Recoleta, a fashionable neighborhood and also the sight of the most expensive land in Argentina: the cementary. A walk through the "streets" is very impressive, and many of the nation's founders are buried there. Further to the north are large parks which are always filled with people, and Belgrano, the neighborhood where the university is located. I have visited all of these places, and also have attended the Rotary Club of Buenos Aires meeting in the impressive Plaza Hotel and the Rotary District Conference. Outside the Capital. I have traveled to the La Plata, the provincial capital of Buenos Aires, which is much more tranquil, and typical of provincial cities. To see the campo, or country, I went with Natalia to her quinta, or country house to relax and breathe clean air for a weekend. During Easter Break I really saw a different aspect of Argentina: Potrerillos, an area in the Andes near Mendoza. We spent three days camping, trekking, rafting and horseback riding. We all had a terrific time, and it was not easy to leave, especially since to return to Buenos Aires we had a 15 hour bus ride. Another day excursion was to Tigre, where two rivers converge north of Buenos Aires to form many islands and a totally different lifestyle from the busy city..
I have plans to visit many other areas of Argentina in the next eight months.
Conclusion
I am delighted to be in Argentina and really appreciate this opportunity. I enjoy observing the mixture of Northamerican, European and Latin cultures that are apparent in Argentina. Meeting people is one of my favorite activities, as is discussing politics, especially with the elections only about a week away. All Argentines have an opinion on the political and economic situations, and are quite vocal in expressing their opinions.
In the upcoming months I intend to continue what I have been doin

Dear Everyone, (This is the letter from last week that I had so much trouble sending) I found the letter and was actually able to use a computer, so here's what I wrote ayer: Sounds like the rummage sale went well. I'm happy that you got rid of all the stuff. Did Charlie Matthews come again at the end?
Tell Ed and Pat that they are most invited to visit me if they want to. I will have winter break july 15-30 and will be happy to show them Buenos Aires and travel to another part of the country. I will write them a letter, but if you talk or write to them soon please let them know. It would be good to see them.
I didn't do a whole lot this weekend. The weather was perfect, even though they forecasted rain for all three days. Monday was a holiday--dia del trabajador. The transportation worked, but most everything else was closed. There weren't even newspapers. I studied most of the day and in the late afternoon went with the Mitres to "tomar sol". It was relaxing, even though there were people everywhere. In the morning I did the training circuit around a manmade lake: push ups, pull ups, etc. It made me feel good.
Saturday I did get out of the city, to Tigre, a town of islands where two rivers join. I took the new Tren de la Costa, which was renovated after 40 years of not being used. Very modern, clean(for now), and professional service. Everyone was impressed. Then I took a lancho colectivo to an island where the mitres have membership. I got off the boat and was immediately attacked by mosquitoes. I didn't stay long. Now my legs look like they have some terrible disease.
It seems like I always have a lot to read. I've been meeting with my research supervisors and always have more to read, but that's good, I'm learning a lot. I'm still frustrated at my level of Spanish. I think I should be able to understand everything and still can't. I guess I just have to keep working at it.
Days are getting a lot shorter here, soon I'll be waking up before the sun rises. That's hard! I learned yesterday that it's a tradition to eat noquis the 29 of every month. It's an Italian tradition and is supposed to bring good luck.
And Mom, the reason that Argentina doesn't have corridas here is because Buenos Aires looked to Paris for its culture rather than to Spain.
Hope everyone is well. Lots of love, I miss you all,
Gretchen

Hello! Welcome back from St. Paul, Hope everything went well. Thanks Mom for your message. The mastercard charge was correct. What is Employee Express? I didn't even know I had a pin number.
The camping gear sounds great! God listened to my wishes! I can't wait to try it out--in December with my super weather sleeping bag.
Mate is a drink with mate leaves, which are kind of similar to tea, but much stronger. The Argentines put the leaves in a special cup/container, than put in about the equivalent of 3 tablespoons of hot water. Using a strawlike device they sip it, frequently refilling with hot water. It's a stimulant, and many people drink it in the morning or at siesta. The Mitre parents drink it all the time--I still haven't tried it. When we went to Mendoza, many of the Argentines brought along their mate cups, mate, and thermos for hot water, and the cafes along the way provide free hot water, because they know how important it is for people to drink their mate.
Elections were Sunday, and I went with the family when they went to vote. The voting places were at the schools, with the names posted outside: there was a voting place about every block. When we found the right one, they showed their i.d. and went into the cuarto oscuro, which is just a room where they vote alone. To vote, they select the paper that has the president they want and another one with the diputados, or representatives that they want. That's it. Each party has a paper with the name of their presidential candidate on one half and all of the diputados on the other half. A person can cortar la boleta, or rip the ballot in half, choosing a president from one party and the diputados from another. There are about 20 political parties, and their were about 12 presidential candidates (many shared Menem).
Menem won, as you probably know. This election used a different system from previous ones, since the constitution was reformed in 1994, doing away with the electoral college. It also established a system of ballottage, where if the leading candidate doesn't have 45% of the vote (not counting votes in blanco, or envelopes without ballots (since everyone is required to vote, this is a sign of protest)), or 40% with the nearest candidate 10 percentage points behind, there is a second election between the two highest vote getters. The system is based on the France system, but has a few more problems (of course!). For example, if two candidates both have over 45%, they are both president. Or if one has 45.1% and the other 44.9%, there is no ballottage (second election), but if the difference is between 44.9% and 35% there is. Argentine politics will never follow reason.
I've been following the results and commentaries, and it appears that the most interesting thing is what will happen to the political parties? The political party of the second vote getter, Bordon, is actually a conglomeration of political parties: will they stay together or separate? And the traditional opposition to peronism, the UCR, did very poorly in this election. Will it fall apart? If the system doesn't have a strong opposition to peronism, the government probably will return to the caudillismo that Peron had.
As you can see, I had a lot of fun observing it all. The parties didnt' have so much money this year, so there was less propaganda; nevertheless there was a lot of mudslinging. For example, Menem attacked Bordon for being a virgin when he got married--in a machista country, he is then seen as a wimp. It's all quite ridiculous.
I mailed Andy's birthday present today, Tuesday, so perhaps it will arrive before his birthday. If it doesn't, tell him it's coming (I hope, you never know with the mail).
I look forward to hearing the St. Paul stories. Until later,
Love,
Gretchen

Hi! Sounds like Dad and Pete had a fun time in St. Paul, or fun as far as St Paul as concerned! For some reason I didn't even think about you driving up there--I guess I'm used to being carless. How is Grandma's hearing? I got tired of shouting every time I wanted to talk to her.
I had my geography midterm yesterday and think it went well--won't know for two weeks because next Thursday is a holiday--25 de mayo, day of their revolution in 1810 for independence. Next tuesday a test in econ over inflation. What fun!
I've been trying to figure out plans to get out of the city and away from school, but so far things haven't been working out. It's frustrating. I have been going out at night more, taking in the Buenos Aires night life. It's much more exciting than the Rensselaer night life! Tango classes are going okay, but the biggest problem is too few guys. As always. (Ed and Pete, if you want to meet girls, take a dance class, you'll meet lots of them)
When is Andy's first t-ball game? It should be fun to watch! Good luck Andy, keep your eyes on the ball!
Have a good weekend!
Love,
Gretchen

Subject: DAYS ARE SHORTER
Dear Mom, Dad, Ed, Pete, Matt, Ingrid and Andy,
hello! Sounds like everyone is busy. Can't believe that the
boys had trouble putting up the tent--they need to go to Girl
Scout camp. On second thought, not a good idea, as they don't
know about poison ivy.
Is Andy learning lots about t-ball? He was great with
balls when he was younger. And is Matt nervous about play try-
outs?
Connie and I are going to Iguazu on June 9. I'm very excited. We'll be gone for 7 days: it's a 20 hour bus trip to get there, so we won't actually be there for too long. After that, only three more weeks of classes. Hurray!
I finally heard from Prof.Charney, my advisor at Rosary. She filled me in on who won the awards and who was going where-it seems like such a different world. She also told me what more I needed to take as far as classes go and was generally supportive. Do you ever see Amanda? I haven't heard from her in ages. I guess she doesn't read e-mail, but she never told me for sure. So, if you see her, tell her that I feel abandoned and that I can't tell her about all my new boyfriends.
Thursday is 25 de mayo, a holiday. I am going to a lunch with some Rotoracters, whom I met Sat at a Rotary assembly. This time I only stayed for two hours, avoided all the old men, and went witht he Rotoracters to McDonalds for lunch. (Oh, no McDonalds!).
Hope everyone is doing well, that Peter hasn't fallen off the roof and that no one had any big problems in jogathon. Haven't heard from Mike Weso. Why is Grandma Schenk still mad at me? She still hasn't written me. Maybe my letter to her got lost in the mail.
Take care,
Love,
Gretchen

Hello everyone!
The weather is grey, everyone has a touch of something, and I slept almost all the day and drank so much I should be swimming now. Susana and Lucia also don't feel well, so we're all drinking soup and juice. I think my sore throat has gone away now, and since tomorrow is a holiday I have nothing to do but relax. Hurray!
I want to call on Saturday to wish Andy a happy birthday, but after thinking about it, it makes more sense if you call me, as the rates are about half the price from the U.S. The number is 011 541 787 4763, and if you call about 5 pm it should be 7 pm here. Write me and let me know if that's a-ok for you, I'll read my e-mail Friday. I would like to hear all your voices; I may not even recognize Matt's voice if it has changed much!
Lots to read here, in every class. But only 6 weeks of classes left-not too much!
I miss you all!
Love,
Gretchen

Dear Hoosiers,
HAPPY BIRTHDAY ANDY! I delegate my 8 spanks to Ingrid. See, I'm a nice sister! Eat lots of cake--yum, yum.
Yesterday for independence day I went to a Rotaract lunch with good food and some frindly people my age. Nothing too remarkable to say about it all, except that the house is five blocks away from Maradona's house! (Don't ooh and awe too loud!)
I've been doing lots of resting and reading, trying to get more energy. Everyone has a touch of something, usual as we go into winter (groan). I'm already ready for summer and warm weather. Hopefully Iguazu will be a lot warmer--lately it's been in the 60's (or 23 C--I have to use Celcius here, and kilometers, too. It still can be confusing.)
Thanks Mom for sending the poli sci listing from the catalog. I also got a funny letter from Amanda on Wednesday. As far as Kris' wedding, I don't know what I should do. I got the invitation (without anything written, not even hi), but don't know if I should send a gift or bring something (what?) back with me at the end of the year. Please advise.
So are relatives coming for Andy's birthday? Hope it's fun. Did I tell you that at Lucia's birthday party all the younger people filmed "Attack of the Beast"? It was a lot of fun, and it avoided the boring small talk that's usually associated with get-togethers. (It's especially boring for me because I don't know the family and who's who and all that. There is one uncle that is really a character-he's German and the best
amateur ornithologist in Buenos Aires, and he's currently competing in a TV game show where they have another expert (from La Plata) testing his knowledge. His son, the director of our movie, is a weightlifter who is the South American champion in his weight group and has a good chance of going to the Olympics next year.)
This morning I bought the ingredients (or reasonable substitutions) for chocolate chunk cookies. I'm going to show Lucia how to make them--homemade cookies are really a rarity here.
Have a good weekend!
Love,
Gretchen

Subject: NICE hearing from you

Dear Mom, Dad, Pete, Ed, Matt, Ingrid and Andy,
It was great to hear your voices! I really enjoyed talking with everyone.
Did Andy have a nice birthday? Hope it was lots of fun. I got an e-mail message from the Boles who were at a barbecue at Mike Weso's house on Sunday.
Are the boys happy to end school? I wish I could, I'm tired of studying now. I spent all day today working on economics, trying to understand it. What fun. I'm going running with Connie in a little while.
Pete, you sound like you don't have enough to do! Did you tell everyone what I told you about my boyfriends? (yeah, in plural)
Saturday night's party was a lot of fun, but I paid for it the next day--I was so tired that I didn't do anything. I had absolutely no energy.
Dad, you asked awhile ago if the Islas Malvinas are still a big deal. They definitely are. Friday night I was downtown and saw a lot of people gathering by the monument to those who died in the war, a monument very similar to the Vietnam Memorial. Soon a band came, marching, and they had a ceremony of taking down the flag and other things between the Argentine army and navy. It was quite interesting.
Hope everyone had a nice Memorial Day. The only thing that is closed around here is the Lincoln Library, which closes for all the American holidays and all the Argentine holidays.
Take care,
Love,
Gretchen

Subject: caves in argentina
Querida familia,
Como estan? Things are going well here. Yesterday I changed my plane ticket, so I wouldn't have troubles finding a spot when all the Argentines decide to go to the U.S. in December. I will arrive Dec 15 at 11:04 am in Indy, or that's what they tell me.
Yesterday I went to the Centro Argentino de Espeologia(C.A.E.). In a word it was interesting. I chatted with the president for more than an hour. He started the organization in 1970, and it's a group of scientists who explore caves all over Argentina. Surprisingly, there are quite a few areas for caves: obviously the Cordillera (the Andes), and also in Cordoba and the southern part of the province of Buenos Aires, where there are some sierras. There are other speleological groups in Neuqen and Mendoza, but it's a group that is quiet and doesn't have any publicity.
The C.A.E., the group here in the capital, specializes in exploring high altitude caves, that is caves between 4,000 and 7,000 meters. To give you a reference, Mount Rainier is a about 4,300 meters, and Mt. Aconcagua, the highest mountain in the western hemisphere, is 6,900. Definitely interesting!
During our talk he showed me a beautiful book he wrote over 25 years about some opera singer. He did a very complete job, and told me it had cost him about a million dollars, since he flew to many of the cities in Europe to do the research there. (Unfortunately I forgot who the singer is, something like Constantino, and he sang during the first part of this century, even in Indianapolis during one tour.) He also told me that he works for the Argentine government with the military (but as a civilian) finding caves. He is also in charge of an organization that deals with "OMNIs", or in English initials UFOs. I didn't follow that one up, but definitely would like to learn what they have found or what they expect to find.
En fin, I don't know if I will get to go exploring with them, but he did lend me some of their newsletters, so I am learning about Argentine caves. Most of the caves are of yesso, which I can't remember what it translates to (that's a problem when I learn scientific terms--if I understand what they mean in Spanish I don't look them up and I don't know the English translation--also a problem with economic terms, but not so much.) There is a fairly large one of calcite near Mendoza which the organization mapped and studied to open for tourism. Well, they submitted a thick study to the government, the property owners stole it, and now they run the cave, charging about $20 a tour, and according to Julio (?--I can't remember his last name) they ruined it. He is still trying to get the government to expropriate the land so the cave can be run better.
Another of the articles in the newsletter was about a trip they made to Salta province to look for a cave. Most of these caves are really lava tubes, by the way. The majority of the report dealt with the altitude sickness and freezing temperatures they had to deal with. They never did find the cave during the entire week, but as the article said, it was a trip they would never forget.
Actually I don't need to go underground for darkness--the sun doesn't rise here until 8 and it sets about 5. Fortunately it's usually sunny.
Don't fall off the boat!
Love,
Gretchen

Hi! today's it rainy, but i'm in a good mood. I checked out a book of disasters from the Lincoln Library, and enjoy reading about them. It's also the last day of the week for my classes, and next Friday I go to Iguazu! (Im counting down the classes!)
Did Miss Ingrid win any awards? What will she be doing this summer? will she be a deck bum (as opposed to a pool rat?) I'm learning some of the Argentine lumfardo, which can be quite picturesque.
Thanks for the recipe, Mom, but the one I have in mind I think is called Raisin Oatmeal Spice cookies. It has raisins and cinamon and nutmeg and I'm not sure exactly what else.
Now I'm going to go "home" and study awhile. Imagine doing such a thing! Yesterday I couldn't motivate myself to study so I walked to the lake in the park and watched the birds. when I got up to leave, I noticed that there was some animal in the water--I think a beaver! There are always surprises everywhere.
To give you another idea of some of the government's great policies, here's the money situation: Argentine coins are in dominations of 1, 5, 10, 25, 50 centavos and 1 peso. 1 centavos are almost never used. 5 and 10 are of very similar size and 25 and 50 also of close size. The old people complained because they had a hard time distinguishing between the coins, so the government began printing the 5 and 25 in silver color. However, those coins can't be used on the buses, which is what most people need the coins for! Great planning!
take care
love,
Gretchen

Subject: weekend
Dear mosquito bitten people,
How are you? Are the mosquitoes of Rensselaer attacking you? I also have a number of mosquito bites. Here's my adventure for the weekend: Saturday a friend and I went to la reserva natural Otamendi, which is about two hours north of Buenos Aires. We took the bus and walked 2 km from the highway to the reserve, where we talked with a park ranger. He told us that we could go off the trail where it says only to go off the trail with a guide, and then we set off. I was most impressed with the interpretive displays--well done, thought provoking. The reserve was established only in 1990. it was so nice to be away from the city, in a nature area. I delighted breathing the clean air and hiking in a natural environment. When we got back from the hour long walk, the park ranger invited us to accompany him and two volunteers to the river, where they would do wildlife and bird identifying. We accepted, and got in the back of the Ford pickup (another surprise as national parks rarely have much money). The hike started innocently enough--we walked on twisty paths in single file, sometimes ducking or pushing aside the tall grasses or bushes. To my astonishment at a point we saw some cows wandering around--they are not supposed to be on the reserve, but due to politics, the park officials can't do much. Slowly the hike got a little more involved: we crossed canals on log bridges (made of two logs), walked on top of fallen trees, and for awhile made our own path, which was not easy in the increasingly dense underbrush. We also destroyed some shelters people had been living in, as there are some refugees in the area. After two hours we had reached the edge of the reserve and we rested a bit.
On the way back we went faster, as we had already identified quite a bit on the way in, including a plant that is in the Chicago Arboretum, that when you touch the leaves fold up (mimosa). I thought it was terrific to be seeing it in its natural environment. We followed the same trail for most of the way, but then the park ranger decided to go a little bit different. We came to a canal, and he announced, "It's time to get wet!" We looked, and saw two logs, but both went under water, not connecting. We looked at him incredulously. "?En serio?" He was serious. I had brought extra pants and socks, so I took off my hiking boots and charged right in. The water wasn't as cold as I thought, and it was kind of fun. I put on my dry socks after crossing, deciding to keep my wet jeans on as they were better protection against the thorny bushes and multitudes of mosquitoes than my stretch pants. We got back scratched and bitten, but I had even more energy than when I started. I was so excited to be trekking through the "wilds." It was interesting to see how the park ranger talked with the people fishing along the way back, getting to know them and talking about how some people were ruining the area for alls with the garbage they left behind.
In the evening I had another new experience: Diego, Lucia and I went to the studio of a state tv station because their tio is a contestant on a game show, answering about the birds in the area. It was a lot of fun and I was even on TV--although I was the only one who recognized myself when we watched the video. The uncle answered correctly, so his winnings thus far are $6000 and he will come back to try again next week.
Yesterday, Sunday, I didn't do much of anything. Today I went to the cementary Chacarita today to see Carlos Gardel's tomb, and I was even more impressed by that cementary than by Recoleta. It had the huge tombs, and also pavilions with four levels of galerias of those slide-the-body-in graves. It was a bit disconcerting to see a sump pump.
This cementary is so big that it has several roads going through it, and it was completed by a taxi, looking for weary walkers. I laughed, surprising one of the maintenance men.
At the tomb of Carlos Gardel, two men arrived at the same time that I did. One climbed up and removed the remnants of three cigarettes in his hand, and put in two fresh ones. It was quite a sight.
Good luck with redoing the family room, hope Pete is ready to go back to school. Dad your typeface sounds like something you would invent!
Thanks to Grandma for her letter-I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. I
told the Mitres that she called him as very friendly looking and la Sra. and Lucia as lovely, and they were flattered.
I also received a letter from Jackie Howell. She had to do a report on a country so chose Argentina, which she never realized was so large, she told me. She got extra credit points for showing the postcard I sent her. She and her family are excited to go back to Jewel Cave for the summer. Love,
Gretchen

Subject: hopefully going to Iguazu
Thanks for the recipe mom, that's the one.
Sounds typical that david is going to Kenya. He always likes to do things that are different.
Tomorrow I am supposedly leaving for Iguazu, but as of this moment, the day before, we still don't have the tickets. Hopefully Connie was able to get them this morning. I will not be a happy camper if we don't go this week.
Yesterday I went to the museo de ciencias naturales de Buenos Aires. It wasn't too good, but I did enjoy what I did see. Afterwards I went to the Centro argentino de espeleologia to return the newsletters (has Windy City Grotto sent any newsletters recently?) In the office was a peruano who will be leading an expedition to a recently discovered-by-satelite city in which the Incas supposedly hid their treasures. Sound familiar? I was intrigued. The Argentine director gave me the impression that this other guy wasn't too competent, so I don't know how the expedition will go. Doubtfully like Dirk Pitt's.
So Andy's swimming! I found out that Diego used to swim competitively. We're still looking for a covered pool that doesn't cost more than $10 to swim each time. And t-ball too. At least he didn't strike out! Sounds like Andy has a much more promising t-ball future than I had!
So Ed, have you written me a letter yet? You can tell me all about lifeguarding. I spent a lot of time watching people and daydreaming about their lives. There isn't too much else to do while yu\ou're lifeguarding, unless you are on the show Bay Watch (which is watched here--but Walker Texas Ranger even more so--it is usually ranked in the top 5 shows watched in Argentina--scary, eh?)
If you don't here from me for awhile, that's a good sign, as I will be in Iguazu. Hopefully the weather will be good.
Have fun in the warm weather!
Love,
Gretchen

Hello everyone! How are you?
I made it back safely from Iguazu with only one snake bite! My leg is still a bit swollen, and I think I have a strange tropical disease, I have weird spots all over me and laugh hysterically whenever anyone asks me a question. That might be because I fell and struck my head on a rock, or maybe the piranha that jumped out of the water and bit me transmitted some virus.
Well, that is obviously not the truth, but the truth isn't too much different. Now I've got your interest! Here's what really happened this past week:
Connie and I left Buenos Aires late Friday afternoon and we arrived in Foz de Iguazu, Brasil Saturday morning about 8 am. We had the rest of the day free, and since the other 20 members of our group were older and scattered in different hotels, we decided we wouldn't rest but start seeing this new spot. First we went to the supermarket, where we stocked up on water and cookies, and enjoyed seeing the Brasilian products, which are pretty much the same as in Argentina. One difference was instead of giving small change they gave hard candies, a good idea since it seems that no one ever has change.
In the afternoon we hopped on a colectivo that said Parque Nacional and headed to the Cataratas, the Brasilian side. We knew that we would go with the group on Monday, but we couldn't wait until then. We got off the second colectivo after traversing fantastic jungle scenery, and first noticed lots of beaver-like animals, called quatis in Spanish and Portuguese, surrounding the tourists and begging for food. The second thing I noticed was the sound--the roaring of the Cataratas. It was most impressive, and two steps later we had our first spectacular view of Iguazu Falls. The falls stretched out, continuing and continuing, the white water interspersed with the green vegetation, the bright sun highlighting the colors and making rainbows. One couldn't take it all in at once.
When we got our feet back on the ground, we continued along the path, admiring the beautiful butterflies (more than 800 species are in the area), the scattering lizards or salamanders and the lushous vegetation (more than 2000 species). Our eyes delighted with more views of the falls, and after 20 minutes we reached our first view of the Garganta del Diablo, the strongest part of the falls. A boardwalk extends out into the river where we could feel the mist and the strong wind the water creates as it hits the rocks.
We spent the rest of the afternoon enjoying the ring tk isdu.ar (UUP86 are the i parthe Cenhergraves.er arney and ta de so tt wil witg the ittesed in the supermhe amtifyconomics, tryin the Cataratas coed in tt wilnk cookies supuld neveek.
